I hear you. But that's not really true.
The guy or gal under the caterer's table isn't the real you. It's The Networker - the persona that takes over when you ride into networking battle, all laced up into an ill-fitting shell of "serious business" armor.
We all know this character well:
The Networker looks like a suit, talks like a marketer and smiles like a politician at a fish fry.
The Networker is at once terrified to make the wrong move, yet can barely function under the weight of all those prefabricated, external ideals you feel pressured to live up to.
The Networker blurts out canned elevator speeches at the slightest provocation, delivered in the same "held at gunpoint," caffeinated desperation that is generally reserved for when you're trying to talk your way out of a speeding ticket. If you can get the words out at all, that is.
And you're saying that this façade, this shaky-kneed poser possessed by the ghost of lead-generation-to-come is the real you?
I didn't think so.
The Networker is a product of the Illusions of Scarcity, a phantasm of fear-based thinking and limited perspective.

I’ve got a confession to make.
I wasn’t always a natural networker.

Trying to be that kind of networker was a drag. It wasn’t me. It was someone else. The “monkey mind” took over in my head. I wasn’t smart enough. I didn’t have anything interesting to say. I didn’t know what to say. People would think I was an idiot or pushy or boring or any of a million other things that weren’t cool.
So I stopped going to those events.
Until it hit me one day.
People aren’t like vending machines. You can’t deposit information like a coin in a slot and expect to get a sale or a referral instantly.
In my early approach to networking, I had let all my fears cause me to show up as someone else.
You see, my natural style is to connect with people. Talk to anyone who knows me and they’ll tell you I’m a natural connector. Connecting is what I do. And I had lost that somewhere along the line.
When this realization hit me, I instantly started showing up differently. This powerful mental shift catapulted me into Abundant Networking.
I began to look at every experience as an opportunity to build a relationship – the kind that human beings naturally build when they’re at ease, interested and not trying to be someone else, for some other reason.
I started being myself.
In the next two years, I interviewed over 60 celebrated authors, business owners, and experts. People like Seth Godin, Dr. Ivan Misner, Michael Gerber, Lance Secretan, Tim Sanders, Michael Gelb, Daniel Pink and so many more.
How did I do it?
